Markets continued to slide off coronavirus fears. The two-day drop in the Dow amounts to nearly 1,900 points. The S&P 500 has shaved off $1.7 trillion of value, a 6.3% drop, the biggest two-day dive since August 2015.
At the time of publishing today’s newsletter, futures pointed to markets opening down but have been flipping both slightly red and green overnight.
Democratic contenders gathered last night to debate in South Carolina. Bernie Sanders faced most of the attacks as he’s solidified his frontrunner status.
U.S. health officials warned that the spread of coronavirus in the United States is “inevitable” and that people must prepare for how to deal with it. Britain will begin random coronavirus testing. Japan announced its first coronavirus death. Iran confirmed its 19th death. France confirms three new cases and one death.
Coronavirus cases have spread outside of Italy, into Switzerland, Germany and Spain’s Canary Islands.
American troops have returned to Saudi Arabia for the first time in nearly 17 years to deter attacks from Iran, launching F-15 fighter jets and manning Patriot missile batteries at a base southeast of Riyadh.
Disney CEO Bob Iger stepped down to focus on content, with Disney+ becoming an important component of the company’s future. He was replaced by the head of Disney parks, Bob Chapek.
