Reflections from CES Las Vegas 2024

What I (with an assist from DALL-E) imagine CES looked like in the 1940s

Reflections from CES Las Vegas: A Leap into the Future with ON_Discourse

My mind is buzzing following an exhilarating CES in Las Vegas last week.

I was part of a larger team at ON_Discourse, a private membership community for business leaders who participate in the Discipline of Discourse to cultivate perspectives, decision-making, and meaningful relationships. I joined the company early last year and lead content and product.

I'm thrilled to share some clever innovations and thought-provoking discussions that unfolded. This year, CES was not just a showcase of technological advancement but a testament to the power of connection, transparency, and intelligence in tech.

The Power of Discourse at CES

Our ON_Discourse briefing event and floor tour at CES were vibrant platforms for challenging conversations and groundbreaking ideas. We saw how the discipline of discourse is not just a tool but a powerful catalyst that drives innovation and meaningful change.

At our briefing event, our members discussed how AI would augment user experiences and interfaces, how AI would transform work structures and processes, and if the concept of a brand radically changes in an AI-centric marketplace.

Our floor tour offered a CES experience like none ever before. It was far from the normal floor tour, with deep, rich interaction between members and our guide Matt Chmiel, our host Toby Daniels, and our provocateurs Michael Treff and Dan Gardner. Through this unique tour, members gained a more nuanced understanding of what CES is (and is not) telling us about the year ahead.

Redefining Health: The Connected Leap

A highlight at CES was the fascinating array of Connected Health products. Abbott and Withings led the charge, showcasing devices that exemplify our commitment to blending technology with human well-being. Abbot’s Lingo and Withings BeamO could provide us with real-time diagnostics to make better health decisions throughout our day, and that data at scale could lead to insights we’ve yet to unlock.

The Magic of Transparency: LG’s Transparent Screens

LG's Transparent TV screens were nothing short of magical. They reminded us that technology can be both functional and aesthetically transformative. It’s unlikely to be more than a gimmick for the home but could be a novel and eye-catching way for marketers to show off products in a retail setting.

Rabbit's Leap with AI Hardware

The unveiling of a new AI hardware device by Rabbit was a standout moment. The Rabbit R1 is a pocket-sized AI assistant launched by a US-based startup, Rabbit, in partnership with Teenage Engineering. The device has been described as half smartphone, half AI chatbot. The device is designed to eliminate the need to interact with apps on a smartphone. Instead, you can simply push a button on the side of the R1 and tell the AI to do a task for you, such as booking an Uber ride or ordering food. Rabbit R1 offers a glimpse into what the future of AI-powered devices might look like and how it breaks the mold of the traditional smartphone.
